In 2001-02,
the Parent Board initiated a fall mum sale as a fund-raiser. They
made arrangements with the Rotary Club to raise the mums there and
they were transported to Linworth for the fall sale in September.
On May 2,
2002, Linworth students approved the establishment of a mum garden
on the Linworth property and agreed to support this project by providing
assistance by helping to water, weed, and trim them over the summer.
Several families signed up for a week at a time to water the mum
garden throughout the summer. About 10 people helped with the first
"pinching" --taking off the terminal buds which stimulates
lateral growth (therefore more branching and more flower stems per
plant). Since then, the mum garden was enlarged. Linworth families
still take responsibility for helping to pinch the mums in the early
summer and to water the mum garden for a week at a time throughout
the summer. The mum sale has become an annual fundraising event
each fall
